Anderson County, SC (WSPA) – Deputies in Anderson, South Carolina have made an arrest in the death of a newborn child, found Saturday in the woods.
Joanie Faith Holcombe, 23, is charged with murder.
Investigators say she confessed to them about the child’s death and burial.
Anderson County’s sheriff is using this case to remind parents of the state’s “Safe Haven” law, which allows people to abandon their newborns at certain places with no questions asked.
“So lives can be saved. That baby will have a chance to live and can be taken in to DSS custody and maybe turned over to another family member or relative that can care for the baby, care for them properly and give them a good home,” said Anderson County Fire Department Batallion Chief Michael Guest
Safe havensS include hospitals, law enforcement offices, houses of worship, EMS providers, or fire departments. The person who leaves the child does not have to reveal his or her identity.
