AUGUSTA — An elderly man who was accused of shooting and killing his wife’s nephew inside University Hospital in 2012 has died.

89-year-old Charles Gorrell was charged with the murder of 59-year-old Tim Grooms.

Investigators say Gorrell had a disagreement with Grooms about his wife’s financial situation.

Authorities say Gorrell brought a handgun into his wife’s hospital room and shot Grooms several times.

Grooms died on the scene.

Gorrell never went to trial because his doctors said he was too sick to stand trial.

The 89-year-old died in a nursing home Friday morning.

The Grooms family tells News Channel 6 they are still devastated by the death of Tim.

They’re also upset because Gorrell never went to trial.
