Augusta, GA (WJBF) – The Augusta GreenJackets, a Single-A Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, have announced their annual Reading Program, promoting literacy in the CSRA.
Presented by Circle K, Zaxby’s, California Dreaming, Maurice’s BBQ, and Augusta University Health, the GreenJackets Front Office Staff and mascot, Auggie, will be visiting partner schools throughout the month of March.
In 2015, the GreenJackets made over 30 appearances to schools around the CSRA and invited 35,000 students to be part of the program. This year, the GreenJackets plan to invite over 40,000 students.
“The GreenJackets are excited to help promote literacy throughout the CSRA,” stated GreenJackets general manager Tom Denlinger. “Year in and year out this program continues to grow thanks to our partners and teachers, this year is gearing up to be one of the best to date!”
All schools are invited to sign up for the Reading Program, which is a four-week program divided into four sections; each section is represented as a “base” on the diamond. Once an assignment is completed, students will win a prize and advance to the next base. The ultimate goal for the program is for all students to hit a “home run” by the end of the four weeks. Prizes include:
- 1st Base: FREE cookie from Zaxby’s
- 2nd Base: FREE Kids Meal from California Dreaming
- 3rd Base: FREE Kids Meal from Maurice’s BBQ
- Home Run: FREE Ticket to a GreenJackets game provided by Augusta University Health
A GreenJackets representative will bring the appropriate number of reading program booklets to each school. These booklets contain Reading Program instructions and coupons for each base the student’s reach. The GreenJackets will also provide an instruction sheet for each teacher and a poster to display in each classroom.
Each school will choose a GreenJackets home game date for their home run hitters to attend, and the GreenJackets will distribute game tickets to each school for the students who reached their reading goals and hit a home run. Reading Program schools and home run hitters will be recognized with a pre-game parade around the warning track on their game date.
The 2016 Reading Night dates are April 15th, 29th, 30th, May 13th and 14th.
