Augusta, GA (WJBF) – A Richmond County mother who is accused of stabbing, killing her 2-year-old daughter back in May of 2013 has entered a plea ahead of her trial, which is scheduled to begin next week.
Marina Mae Middlebrooks is accused of Murder in the death of Sky Allen.
WJBF News Channel 6 has learned that a tentative trial date for a woman accused in the death of her 2-year-old daughter.
The girl was ejected from her mother’s vehicle in a crash on Ray Owens Road that happened on May 2, 2013 in Columbia County. Autopsy results showed that Allen did not die from injuries suffered in the crash, but was already dead before the crash.
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office investigators say the child died a day before the crash due to multiple stab wounds in the right side of her neck.
Middlebrooks was indicted on May 28, 2013 on charges of Malice Murder and Cruelty to Children in the First Degree.
Middlebrooks’ trial is set to begin on Monday, February 22nd in Richmond County. She entered a plea of “not guilty by reason of insanity” during a court appearance this past Tuesday in Augusta. There is a complication in this case. Both the prosecution and defense attorneys have agreed that the stabbing happened in Richmond County, but the crash happened in Columbia County. She has been indicted in both counties.
There has been no official word on what will be done about the Columbia County indictment, or if/when she would go to trial in Columbia County.
