AIKEN, S.C. – People across the area stepped back in time for the Battle of Aiken Sunday. The annual event reenacts life during the Civil War — giving an up close history lesson.
Families like the Hottendorfs took their kids on a trip back in time.
“We enjoy it. It’s our third year out here and it’s a good time,” said Mark Hottendorf.
A good time to look back at conflicts big and small. From cannons and colonels to Tin Types — which are aluminum photographs that help picture life in 1865. Event organizers say that variety has been paying off for the community.
“This time we’ve got about four times as many soldiers as we did last year. We have close to a thousand reenactors,” said Danny Francis, Commander with the Sons of Confederate Veterans – the organization which hosts the event. “We generally bring in over a million dollars from people who come from outside Aiken County.”
The actual Battle of Aiken happened on February 11, 1865.
