AIKEN, S.C. – Two separate fires on Barnwell Street and Aldrich Street in Aiken kept Public Safety crews busy Monday morning.
Shortly after midnight Monday morning, Aiken Department of Public Safety crews responded to a fire on Aldrich Street NE in Aiken’s Crosland Park. Lieutanant Karl Odenthal with the Aiken Department of Public Safety tells WJBF the call came in as a vehicle fire under a carport at the home on the 600 block of Aldrich Street. When crews arrived, the fire had already spread to the home.
No one was inside the home, and Lieutenant Odenthal says he believes the house to be vacant. However, Public Safety is investigating the fire and has labeled it “suspicious”.
When the Aldrich Street fire call came in, crews were already fighting another fire at the Public Defender’s Office on Barnwell Street in downtown Aiken. Lieutenant Odenthal says it is not clear if the fires are connected, but it is “unusual” to have two fires occur at the same time.
