Augusta, GA (WJBF)Goodwill Industries of the CSRA and Midlands hosted a “boot camp” on March 4th to help prepare job seekers for its Spring job fair on Thursday, March 10th.

“The boot camp is basically to help people go through a job fair…a job interview. It’s not so much for teaching them work skills as it is for interviewing and presentation skills,” said Barry Paschal, Goodwill’s Senior Marketing and Communications Director.

“It was really some great feedback that you don’t get on an everyday basis,” said boot camp participant Kyla Farmer.

The boot camps were free, open to the public, and led by human resource professionals from companies that will be hiring at the job fair.

“They’ll tell them how they need to dress when they come to the job fair. They tell them what the interactions will be like with the people who are here offering jobs,” Paschal said. “And best of all, because the job fair’s pretty popular, the last one we had 700 people…those who go to the job fair boot camp are able to go to the front of the line.”

In addition to the boot camp, Goodwill, in conjunction with local nonprofit the Augusta Warrior Project (AWP), offered a breakout session for veterans that addressed the unique challenges that they face when looking for jobs.

Rick Herring, a veteran employer advocate with AWP, said he focuses on placing veterans in federal jobs via usajobs.gov and re-writing resumes filled with military jargon. He also touted the benefits of hiring veterans.

“One thing that people don’t generally know is that there are federal tax credits for hiring veterans,” Herring said. “And there’s the perception, normally based in reality, that they’ve got some relevant training that will make them a good employee.”

Goodwill’s Spring Job Fair will be on Thursday, March 10 from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. at the Snelling Center on 3145 Washington Road.
