Lincoln County, GA (WJBF) – A 47-year old Arden, North Carolina man was arrested by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies after traveling to Lincolnton, Georgia to meet with what he thought was a child for sexual purposes.
According to Lincoln County Sheriff Bruce Beggs, Houger Carachure Durate, of 23 Owen Drive in Arden, North Carolina came to Lincolnton on Monday afternoon after communicating on the internet and other electronic media with what he believed to be a teenager. Durate was taken into custody without incident at approximately 1:00 p.m. Monday in Lincoln County after he allegedly made arrangements to meet an undercover officer he believed to be the young person.
Sheriff Beggs told WJBF News Channel 6 that Durate is charged with Enticing a Child for Indecent Purposes, Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Obscene Telephone Contact with a Minor, and an unrelated charge of Driving Without a License. He is currently being held in the Lincoln County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
The arrest was made in cooperation with the U.S. Justice Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC), of which Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is a member. The ICAC task force is administered in Georgia by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
The task force operates under state and federal laws which are in place to protect children against sexual predators who use the internet and other electronic devices to make inappropriate contact with children.
Sheriff Beggs said, “it is vital that we use whatever means available to us to protect the most important citizens in our community, our children.”
