Augusta, GA (WJBF) — Cheng Jin of Beijing, China, who just turned 18-years-old earlier this month, is already in Augusta getting ready to play in what he calls “the biggest tournament in golf.” Jin won the rain-shortened 2015 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship last October to become the 4th native of China to qualify for the Masters.
Jin spent Wednesday afternoon at Augusta Country Club. He took some time to talk the junior golfers there who really aren’t that much his junior. He shared his story of how he got to this point. He started playing golf at age 8 and is now the #1 ranked amateur golfer in China and #19 in the world. He says he’s put in a lot of hard work, played in a lot of tournaments (including many AJGA events in the United States), and learned from good players.
Jin says getting the chance to play in the Masters is “like a dream that came true.” He also says he’s looking forward to everything Masters week and hopes he gets the chance to play a practice round with Jordan Spieth. Jin wants to ask Spieth basically everything to find out how Spieth became so good so young.
As far as goals for Masters week, Jin says he’s just trying to enjoy the moment. “I’m really lucky to be here.” He’s gotten the chance to play Augusta National a couple times since he’s been in Augusta. “It’s challenging. It’s amazing. It’s unbelievable.” He also says the greens are really hard. He knows putting well will be a big key for him since he’s “not a long hitter.”
