Grovetown, GA (WJBF) – Monday, traffic was down to one lane as crews were working to widen Robinson Avenue, which is a main corridor to Gate One of Fort Gordon, as well as area schools, in Grovetown, Georgia.

City leaders tell us, this project is just the beginning when it comes to revitalization.

Crews are currently working to widen the road, which is the cause of part of it to be down to one lane. City planner Frank Neal says that’s not all workers are doing to one of the city’s main corridors.

“We are going to be doing enhancements to Robinson Avenue, more pedestrian friendly…the wider sidewalks are going down on Robinson Avenue. There will be some landscape aisles down the center to help calm traffic and make it pleasing to the eye,” said Neal.

That’s music to business owner Frank Wilson’s ears. “Some mornings here, you can’t get in this parking lot, until about 8:30-9:00 in the morning,” he said.

As Wilson shows me the plans, he says the widening project could mean more money in his cash register. He says it’s all about location, location, location. “It’s definitely a win win for my situation, simply because we are in the middle of a block and we’re about to be on a corner with a red light having turning lanes to get in and out of this business. And, it will give access to the school that’s being built behind me. I think it’s excellent.”

Neal adds that this is part of a much bigger revitalization project for the entire city. An empty lot once housed dilapidated mobile homes. Taking a look at the photo, you get an idea of what Neal means when he says “pleasing to the eye.” Eventually, this space will be filled with upscale housing.

Now, you’re starting to see that activity both with residential redevelopment..and, we have some commercial development along Robinson Avenue. You’re about to see a new coffee establishment on Robinson,” Neal added.

They are baby steps to a big future for the city of Grovetown.

Until the end of the week, Robinson Avenue will be down to one lane from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. We are told the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) project is set to be complete within a year.
