UPDATED: Man Suffers Burns In Augusta House Fire

Augusta, GA (WJBF)- The man accused of setting himself on fire and then running into an Augusta home Friday has died.

The Richmond County coroner says 37-year-old Steven Valakos died at the hospital overnight.

Valakos was being treated at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital for serious burns to his body.

He was facing charges once released.

The coroner says no autopsy will be performed.

Augusta, GA (WJBF) – A fire in an Augusta neighborhood is now being investigated by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Early Friday morning, Richmond County Deputies and the Richmond County Fire Department were called to a fire alarm and reports of an individual who had set himself on fire at a home on Eisenhower Drive.

When deputies and fire crews got there they found part of the home on fire.

Investigators say a man identified as 37-year-old Steven Valakos was involved in a domestic dispute with someone who lived in the home.

Investigators say witnesses told them Valakos set himself on fire and then ran into the house. Valakos is being treated at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital. He could be facing charges when he is released.

The woman at the home was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Augusta, GA (WJBF)- We have learned some more information on a Friday morning house fire on Eisenhower Drive, in Augusta.

Fire crews were called to the scene because a burglary alarm went off at the house.

When crews arrived, they found that the back sun room was on fire. They also found a man in the sun room that, they say, was burnt on 97 percent of his body.

A woman, who was also at the house, suffered smoke inhalation.

Investigators say the man, who was the woman’s ex-boyfriend, snuck into the home through the back porch. They add that the couple has lived together on and off for a while.

The man was transported to a local hospital. There is now word on his condition, at this time.

There was smoke damage throughout the home and fire damage in the sun room.
