AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) — Augusta University is celebrating the inauguration of president Dr. Brooks Keel this week.
Sunday was the kickoff for a week long schedule of events for Keel. The event was called “A Toast to Augusta University.” It took place at the fountain on the Summerville campus. People who showed up got to speak with Keel and other school leaders.
They also got to add a little something to the Augusta University time capsule.
“What we want to do is fill the time capsule with the hopes and aspirations that the people who support Augusta University have for this great university. So we’re inviting people to document that, drop a card in the capsule and we’re going to open it in 2028, which will be the 200th anniversary of the founding of the university,” Strategist for AU Heritage Project Deb Barshafsky said.
School leaders say the time capsule will be stored in a bell tower that is currently being planned for construction.
Meanwhile, Keel says there will not be anymore expansion on the Summerville campus. Keel tells us there is just not enough room to construct new buildings for students and faculty.
Instead, any new construction will take place on the Health Sciences campus or in downtown Augusta.
