Greenbrier Football Player Dead after Drowning at Lake Springs

Columbia County, GA (WJBF) – The Columbia County Coroner’s Office tells us that 16-year-old Robert Dwight Ballard, Jr. died attempting to swim across the lake on Sunday. The Greenbrier High School football player drowned around 1:00 p.m. Sunday.

We are told that Ballard’s girlfriend tried to rescue him, but was unsuccessful. She reportedly swam to shore and called for help. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Appling, Ga. (WJBF) – The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirms that a 16-year-old boy drowned at the Lake Springs Recreation Area in Appling, Georgia Sunday afternoon. Officials told WJBF NEws Channel 6 that they have identified the body, but are waiting to notify the parents before releasing the name of the deceased.
