News Channel 6 has learned about the unfortunate passing of a dog you all helped name and fell in love with.
Gabe was found in South Augusta during the first week of February. Dog Networking Agents rescue took him in after he was found walking into traffic.
They quickly realized Gabe had been the victim of abuse and neglect. His body was riddled with scars and fresh wounds.
Vets and animal rescue groups believed Gabe was living proof that there is a dog fighting problem in the Augusta area.
This following is the statement released by DNA on their Facebook page:
“We set you free…
At 5.45 pm this evening, with a room full of love and his Eeyore baby, Gabe said his final goodbyes.
For 95 days he battled the disease that destroyed his body. We were told many times he was a miracle, a will to live like no other.
We have never seen so many people come together to save one dog. He always knew he was loved by so many, this was his anchor, the one thing that kept him going. Finally loved and cherished by humans, something he craved his whole life.
We have no clue how we will come to terms with his loss. We knew on Monday that everything had failed, time was running out, yet we could not prepare for life without Gabe.
Gabe…you touched the hearts of so many, your spirit will be with us always. You came into our lives for a reason.
Fly free…you finally found the two things denied you for so long… Love and peace xxx”
