Just hours after the death of her 18-month old Shakelia Brown returned to the home, where she found her child unresponsive late Monday night. Neighbors say Shakelia Brownwas in tears as she held her child asking for help to revive her.

“She was walking with the baby and holding her saying the baby won’t wake up. She gave the baby to someone up there that did C.P.R., but the baby still did not respond,” said Melvin Holmes, a neighbor.

Holmes lives nearby and he tells WJBF News Channel 6 Shakelia Brown was hysterically crying as the ambulance arrived and told neighbors she wasn’t home at the time of the incident.

“She went to an interview today and she doesn’t know what happened,” Holmes said.

According to several neighbors Jamie Brown was home watching Karmen Brown and her two older siblings.

“That baby screamed and hollered every time she, even when she just seen him she just screamed and hollered. So that should have told her something right there. That the baby is scared of him. He’s doing something to her,” said a neighbor.

A neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous says she heard disturbing noises coming from the home.

“You could hear Karmen crying, crying, crying, crying and she says it’s been going on for about three days. He had been hitting that baby and all kinds of stuff,” said the neighbor.

Now outside of Karmen Brown’s home neighbors have set up teddy bears and candles… a reminder of a life ended too soon.

“She never got a chance to see life,” a neighbor told WJBF News Channel 6.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this case. Karmen Brown’s body was sent to the G.B.I. crime in Atlanta. An autopsy was performed Tuesday morning.
