Baseball Team Adopts Abandoned Puppy

Daisy, official Bat Dog of the Savannah Bananas

SAVANNAH, GA — She is the rags to riches story that is taking the internet by storm. A puppy found abandoned in the parking lot of a baseball stadium in Savannah is now an internet star.

Daisy has already been featured by ABC News, Good Morning America and BuzzFeed, among others. The BuzzFeed story has been shared more that 2,000 times in a little over 24 hours.

“She loves it,” said Jared Orton, who adopted Daisy after she was found outside the stadium of the Savannah Bananas, a summer league college team for which Orton is Team President.

Daisy was just six weeks old when Banana team employees found her abandoned and crying in the stadium parking lot. Orton and his wife Kelsey knew exactly what to do.

“We’ve always talked about getting a dog and then she showed up to Grayson Stadium so we just figured it was fate,” Kelsey said.

Since then, Daisy has been named the team’s official bat dog, but so far she’s been doing a lot of laying around on the job.

“She’s greeted all of our season ticket holders when they come in, people have been picking up their merchandise and coming by to see her and hanging out with her,” Jared said. She’s eight weeks old right now so she’s maybe a little bit young to start her official duties as bat dog, but hopefully in the next year or so we’ll get her trained up and she can be taking baseballs to umpires and getting bats off the field and really having a lot of fun.”

Until then, Daisy brings to the Bananas’ front office some intangible qualities that are hard to find in employees.

“Daisy has a lot of spunk and a lot of energy but she’s also super sweet,” said Kelsey. “She loves to snuggle, she loves to bite, which we are working on, but she’s a great friend.”

The Bananas first home game is Thursday, June 2nd. For more information on the team, click here.
