Burke County, Ga. (WJBF) – Steven Murray, who is charged in the death of 71-year-old Father Rene Robert, from Florida, was denied bond in Superior Court on Friday. The judge determined he was a flight riskand a danger to the community.
New details are painting a better timeline as to what transpired that day on April 10th when Florida priest, Father Rene Robert, didn’t show up to a church function.
In court Friday, the prosecution says Murray asked the priest, who had been counseling him, to borrow his car and Father Robert rode with him. He told Father Robert they were going to South Carolina to see his two children. When he arrived and was denied seeing his kids, the prosecution says he became angry, put Father Robert in the trunk of his car and committed several robberies until he reached Burke County. Investigators say that’s when he shot Father Robert multiple times in a wooded area on River Road. He then drove the priest’s car back to Florida where he was spotted by police and led them on a chase. He and the priests car were later found in Aiken county and he eventually led investigators to Father Robert’s car.
Murray was taken back to the Burke County Jail. No word on when he will return to court.
