WAYNE COUNTY, Ga. — Former Lakeside Football coach Jody Grooms and his wife were arrested Tuesday according to a report from our sister station WSAV in Savannah. Grooms had been serving as football coach and athletic director at Wayne County High School.
According to the report, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Charge say Groom is facing one count of theft by taking from a fundraiser he was involved in. His wife Sharon Grooms is facing three counts of theft by taking for unaccounted money involving the high school cheerleading team.
According to WSAV, the Wayne County School Superintendent said Grooms submitted his resiignation last week.
Grooms coached at Lakeside from 2007-2009 and led the Panthers to a 21-11 record during his 3 years as head coach. The Panthers made the 2nd round of the state playoffs in 2009. Grooms had been the head coach of Wayne County from 2010-2015.
Grooms was nearly fired as Lakeside’s football coach in 2007 after he ran an illegal play in a game. That decision did cost him his Athletic Director job, but he stayed on as coach until leaving for Wayne County following the 2009 season.
