NeSmith, Gamecocks advance to match play at NCAA Golf Championships

Eugene, OR (WJBF) — Senior Matt NeSmith, of North Augusta, and the Gamecocks men’s golf team advanced to the match play portion of the NCAA Golf Championships by finishing in the top 8 after the final round of stroke play Monday.

The Gamecocks started the day in 12th place, 7 shots behind 8th place California. They ended the day in 7th place at +22, easily making the top 8.

NeSmith shot a 74 Monday to finish stroke play at 10-over. He finished T45 individually.

The Gamecocks will face Illinois in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

Georgia’s Lee McCoy finished T6 individually at +1. The Bulldogs as a team didn’t make the cut on Sunday.
