AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A long-time Augusta doctor died Monday while in Colorado.

Dr. Charles Shaefer specialized in internal medicine, endocrinology and diabetes. He graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1979. He was 67 years old.

Shaefer was still practicing at University Medical Group Primary Care in Evans.

Shaefer was in Colorado to speak at a medical conference, something he did frequently in recent years, when he died of natural causes.

Rebecca Sylvester, Director of Strategic Marketing and Promotions at University Health Care System said Shaefer was “loved by thousands of patients, including many physicians who chose him for their care.”

Sylvester reiterated his passion for diabetes treatment and prevention.

“For more than 10 years, he had been asked to speak at conferences across the nation. This is a great loss,” Sylvester said.

According to Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, visitation will be held on Thursday, June 9, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church of Augusta. The memorial service will be Friday, June 10, at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life in the Fellowship Hall.
