All was quiet in Quail Hollow on Monday night, but those 3 hours were filled with tension as officers tried to talk a man out of a home. Nobody else was in the house and after a series of phone calls and text messages the SWAT team was able to go inside and take Kitchens into custody.

For several hours people who live on Portsmouth Place, just making it home from work, couldn’t get to their families.

Investigators say Kitchens, barricaded inside his home at the time, was threatening to harm himself and his family.

“We don’t know all the details. We believe his is upset about some financial issue right now, but other details after investigators speak with him fully,” Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Sargent Glen Rahn said.

The SWAT Team was able to enter the home without force. Investigators say they found a handgun inside.

The dozens of neighbors waiting, on a nearby street, for the standoff to end say this incident comes as a big surprise for their mostly quiet community.

“Normally we’ll have a car break-in or something like that. We haven’t even had any home invasions within, I think 3 or 4 years. So basically this was a shock to me.” Andrew Jefferson said. The Richmond County District 5 Commissioner-elect lives only a few houses down from the standoff.

Jefferson, also the neighborhood association president, wants the standoff to be an eye-opener for their neighborhood, so more people will want to learn important life-saving skills.

“Get more people involved in the Citizens Police Academy that’s held by Richmond County and training by the fire department,” Jefferson said.

Investigators say Kitchens could be facing charges of terroristic threats.
