Chemical spill in south Augusta shuts down road

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Richmond County deputies are still on the scene of a spill in south Augusta.

A hazmat crew was called to the scene after a tanker truck carrying hydrochloric acid had a leak. Marvin Griffin Road is closed while cleanup is underway. The Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department is putting a substance over the spill. The road is expected to be closed another three to four hours.

The leak occurred over a 3,000-foot distance and is approximately 30 inches wide.

The truck driver noticed the spill after seeing a plume of smoke in his rear view mirror.

Employees of the Kellogg’s and EZ Go Textron plants have been told to shelter in place.


Augusta-Richmond County Emergency Management notified residents in the area of the spill.
