Augusta, GA — Mikey Coffman had a husband, children, a job and a home. She was a thriving citizen until her life was changed by rape. That one incident resulted in her falling into a deep depression, which destroyed her marriage. She coped by cutting herself with razor blades before finally turning to pills in an attempt to end her life.
Miraculously Mikey survived the attempted overdose, and she began the long journey of healing, both from her rape and from her suicide attempt. It was with the help of local organizations that she began to put her life back together, acquire a therapy dog, go to college, and gain employment at the Friendship Community Center – the very center that helped her take her life back.
Mikey has a powerful story to share, and she is just one of countless others. The one thing they all have in common is that a United Way organization was behind offering them the hand-up they needed to get back on their feet. That is why LaVerne Gold, the President and CEO of the United Way of the CSRA, along with Mikey is asking for your help as the United Way kicks off its 2016 campaign.
