Scholar Athlete: Aquinas High School’s Connor Sweeney

Augusta, Ga. (WJBF) — Under the leadership of James Leonard, Aquinas football has had a lot of success the past few years. Particularly in 2013, when the Irish won its first-ever football title. But it takes special leaders on the field for Aquinas to achieve that success as well.

This week’s WJBF Scholar Athlete is one of those leaders. Aquinas safety Connor Sweeney is well-rounded as a football and baseball player, his GPA ranks first in his senior class and he volunteers for several service groups.

Particularly on the football field, Sweeney makes everybody better.

“We think he makes us better coaches just by being around him,” coach Leonard said. “Every now and then I’ll make a bad call and he’ll actually correct me, which is great. He keeps me on my toes.”

As for where he finds his motivation to succeed Sweeney said, “nobody like to fail, so everybody wants to work hard to do their best and to be the best for me is to be well-rounded.”

As for college, Sweeney said he wants to attend Clemson University to study chemical engineering.
