BAMBERG, S.C.- Frank N. McNair of Bamberg is dead, and his wife is being treated for a gunshot wound. South Carolina law enforcement officials say it appears that she killed him and then turned the gun on herself.
Saturday afternoon, Bamberg deputies found a grisly scene. They were responding to a reported attempted suicide. They found a woman with a gunshot wound. She was airlifted to a hospital in Columbia. Next-door, they found her husband,Frank C. McNair, dead, with a suspected gunshot wound.
We spoke to a family member who says he is still trying to piece together what happened.
“For this tragedy for this to happen like it is…I don’t really have an idea what’s the cause of that,” said family member Jeffrey Bynes.
Frank was reportedly a minister. Bynes says his cousin, Frank’s wife, is a gentle person.
“Quiet, easy-going…very open. You know very churchy,” Bynes said. “She was a good person. That’s why, you know, I’m just surprised to hear of this situation.”
He says they had been married around 40 years, but he says there may have been problems in the past.
“Whatever their issues is, I don’t know, but I know she was living separately,” he said. “Sometimes she was living down in Georgia, and sometimes she was staying up here, you know, staying with her mother.”
He says their issues weren’t new.
“It’s been going on quite a while,” he said.
But he says he never expected anything like this to happen.
“I’m feeling upset about it,” Bynes said. “Because they was good peoples to me.”
South Carolina law enforecment has not yet released the woman’s name. Her condition is also unknown at this time.
The incident is still under investigation.
