Major natural gas leak reported in Jenkins County

JENKINS COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF-TV) – A spokesperson on site for Kinder Morgan confirmed to WJBF NewsChannel 6 the gas line was shut off shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Kinder Morgan is mobilizing repair crews to fix the gas line.

The Perkins area of Jenkins County is safe and residents can return home.

Kinder Morgan crews will work overnight to finish the gas line repairs.

Highway 25 is reopened.

JENKINS COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF-TV) – WJBF NewsChannel 6 is learning more details about the gas leak in Jenkins County.

A spokesperson for the Millen Fire Department says Kinder Morgan can’t just turn off the gas line, they have to gradually bring the pressure down before they can shut it off.

It could be several hours before the gas line is shutdown.

Emergency Management workers have evacuated many people and are still going door-to-door trying to reach everyone.

They are sending people from Perkins to 2 shelters in Millen, Ga.

People with medical issues or needs are being sent to the Senior Citizen Center on College Ave. next to the hospital.

Everyone else needs to go to the Jenkins County Agricultural Center on Barney Ave. next to the high school.

People need to bring their own supplies to the shelter.

The strong winds from Hurricane Matthew are helping disperse the gas.

At this time Highway 25 is closed in both directions.

JENKINS COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF-TV) – An evacuation is underway in Jenkins County after a natural gas pipeline ruptured in the Perkins area near Highway 25.

All parts of Highway 25 in the Perkins area are closed. Other nearby roads have been blocked off as well.

Viewers tell us they can hear the gas leak from several miles away.

Many of them are describing the sound as a large jet engine.

Others say there is dust in the air from the leak.

Southern Natural Gas Company, which is a division of Kinder Morgan, has a large natural gas pipeline that runs through Jenkins County.

We have a crew on the way to Perkins. As soon as we get more information, we’ll let you know.
