Man arrested in hit and run death of Columbia County man

UPDATE: (Aiken County, SC)- A man is in custody this morning, identified as the driver who allegedly hit and killed Timothy Smith.  Christopher Michael Cheek was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Aiken County Detention Center.  No bond has been set for Cheek and an extradition hearing has not been scheduled.  Once back in Columbia County, Cheek could face charges of homicide by motor vehicle in the 1st degree, hit and run, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane.



COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – One person is dead after being hit while jogging.

According to a spokesperson for the Columbia County Sheriff’s office, Tim Smith was hit while jogging west on Wheeler Road at Tower Drive around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night.

tim-smithSmith died a short time later at Doctor’s Hospital.

Captain Steve Morris says the victim was wearing a yellow reflective vest when he was hit by a silver or white pick-up truck.

Witnesses told the deputies the driver slowed down after hitting the victim, but did not stop.

Investigators are currently searching for the suspected vehicle. It is a silver 2001 Nissan Frontier.
