Augusta, Ga. (WJBF) — High school basketball season is right around the corner, so it’s fitting we recognize a student athlete from one of the best local basketball programs.
Fox Creek’s Rod Culver is this week’s WJBF Scholar Athlete. Culver, a former all-state basketball player, helped lead the Preds to their first state title game appearance in 2015. That’s when head coach Andrew Peckham knew Culver could be something special.
“[Rod’s] a three-year starter on varsity,” Peckham said. “Been starting since his 10th grade year. And he was really a role player his 10th grade year when we went to state championship but he actually led all scorers with 16 points in the state championship game. And that’s kind of when I knew that he had the chance to be a great basketball player, because that moment didn’t phase him.”
Despite the loss in the state title game, Culver fondly looks back on that experience.
“It was exciting,” he said. “Really a huge moment in Fox Creek history. I loved it. It was a great atmosphere.”
Academically, Culver wants to study marine biology in college.
Congratulations to Rod Culver, this week’s WJBF Scholar Athlete.
