Augusta, Ga. (WJBF) — We’re in the thick of Georgia state softball playoffs, but just because South Carolina high school softball doesn’t start up until spring, doesn’t mean we have to wait until then to honor one of the area’s best softball players.
And her talents extend well beyond softball. Saluda High School’s Samantha Nichols is this week’s WJBF Scholar Athlete. Nichols is a three-sport athlete who plays volleyball and basketball — in addition to softball — while also staying on top of her studies, which can get tricky to balance at times.
“It’s extremely hard,” Nichols said. “Like, for example, last night I was up till 2:30 [a.m.] studying for an AP biology test. But you just have to be smart. You just have to keep your priorities straight.”
Christy Nichols can attest to her daughter’s dedication to school.
“She puts forth every effort,” she said. “I walked into the gym at Ridge Spring-Monetta the other day when they were on an away game. I was looking around for her and I couldn’t find her and [her coach] pointed up at the top and she was sitting up at the top row with her biology book open.”
Nichols hopes to attend Clemson University to study biology before hopefully attending medical school.
