Fire crews evacuate residents of Peabody Apartments after fire; no injuries reported

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Richmond County fire crews are evacuating residents of the Peabody Apartments on Walton Way in Augusta.

Dispatch says a fire broke out before 9am, Sunday morning.

Right now, there are no injuries to report.

There’s no word on what started the fire but firefighters are working to remove smoke from inside the building.

We’re told the fire was contained to one apartment on the fourth floor.

However, other apartments did receive water damage.

Firefighters on scene tell us water is dripping from the fourth floor to the lobby area.

They says they have to wait until all the smoke is out of the building before they can assess damage in order to determine if anyone will be forced to spend the day/night somewhere else.
