AUGUSTA,Ga (WJBF) The old jail is on the way out and in its place a new hotel.
To help clear the way Augusta commissioners agreeing to lease 100 spaces in the Reynolds Street parking deck.at 65 dollars a space per month.
“You can’t build a hotel without parking, parking underground very expensive not any land around there we could use for parking,” said Paul Simon of Augusta Riverfront LLC the hotel owners.
Commissioners agree that it made sense to lease the parking spots in order to land the hotel.
“Those parking lots aren’t being utilized this is a new revenue generator for the city I think its 78 thousand dollars,” said Commissioner Sean Frantom.
“That garage is full what five or six times a year,” said Commissioner Dennis Williams.
The plan calls for two sky-walk to be built across Ninth Street to the new hotel, the other across Reynolds Street to the Convention Center.
“By having the bridge over Ninth Street which we’re paying for will tie the hotel to the parking deck then the other bridge the city is paying for that,” said Simon.
Four years ago commissioners rejected building the bridge across Reynolds Street after first agreeing to pay for it.
The agreement was met that we would be obligated to do it so if it’s our obligation were obligated to do it,” said Commissioner Dennis Williams.
This deal was done in the dark; it didn’t go to committee for discussion it was debated at all on the commission floor it was approve after being discussed only in a closed door legal meeting.
“Was it a little too secretive?
“You can easily say that George but at the end of the day I think we made the right decision was it done in the best manner possibly not,” said Commissioner Ben Hasan.
The plan is to break ground before March of next year construction will take about a year the new hotel will create 25 new jobs back to you.
