RIDGEWAY, Va. (WFLA) – Nearly two dozen people were hurt when a car plowed through a crowd after a NASCAR race event this Sunday.
It happened at Martinsville Speedway, WSLS reports. According to the Virginia State Police, the driver was trying to pass another vehicle in post-race traffic when it struck the crowd of people.
At least 22 people were hurt, nine were hospitalized. Their injuries are minor, police officials told WSLS.
Thirteen people were treated on scene for minor injuries, with another nine others transported to nearby hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Those injured range in age from 13 to 65.
The incident happened about an hour after the racing event in the area where fans gather in hopes of getting autographs.
According to police, alcohol doesn’t appear to be a factor but the investigation is ongoing.
