One deputy killed, one injured in Byron, Georgia shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police in Des Moines, Iowa, say two officers have been shot and killed in ambush-style attacks.

BYRON, Ga. (WJBF) – Officials say a deputy in Peach County, Georgia is dead, and another is in critical condition after a confrontation with a suspect.

The shooting happened around 5:30 Sunday afternoon in Byron, Georgia, about 16 miles southwest of Macon. Two neighbors were fighting at a home when the deputies arrived, then one of the suspects allegedly opened fire.

Deputy Patrick Sondron was shot and killed in the altercation, and Deputy Daryl Smallwood was critically injured and taken to the hospital.

The suspect was also taken to the hospital, but we do not know the extent of their injuries.
