Augusta, Ga. (WJBF Sports) — Jelani Watson-Gayle was the best-kept secret on the basketball court last season. It was his first year on the floor for the Wildcats because, well, it was his first-year living in America.

Watson-Gayle moved to Augusta from London prior to last school year and he blossomed on the court for the Wildcats, leading the team to the state quarterfinals. The all-state basketball start is also an all-region soccer player, while sporting a 4.0 GPA. He is also this week’s WJBF Scholar Athlete.

“I actually had a friend who came here before — my brother’s friend called Emmanuel came here before and then so I just sent emails and just tried to come over here mainly for basketball reasons,” Watson-Gayle said while explaining his journey to Augusta.

The Westminster basketball team is sure glad he chose to come here.

“Jelani has just been a joy for me,” Westminster boys basketball coach Mark Tebbs said. “He possess the characteristics of a hard worker: coachable, a great talent. [He has] great handles, can handle the ball and shoot the lights out. We were very excited to have him when he came here.”

Watson-Gayle said he’s hoping to have a strong senior season before continuing his basketball career at the college level.
