Today America will pay tribute to our nation’s veterans and several local events are planned in their honor.
What: Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home Ceremony
Where: 1101 15th Street, Augusta, GA 30901
When: 9:00 am
*Colonel Robert Holmes, a highly decorated officer, will be the guest speaker. He is with the U-S Army Dental Health Activity at Fort Gordon. He’s been in the service since 1984.
What: Augusta Veterans Day Parade
Where: Begins at 13th and Greene Streets – ends on 4th and Broad Streets at the All Wars Monument
When: 10 am
*The parade honors vets past and present. Major General John B. Morrison is the Commanding General of the Parade. The event will include music by the U-S Army Signal Corp Band. JROTC color guards, high school bands and civic groups will also participate.
What: All Wars Monument Augusta-CSRA Veterans Day Observance
Where: 4th and Broad Street (Downtown Augusta)
When: 11 am (after the parade)
*Join the Military Order of the World Wars, Augusta Chapter and the Augusta-CSRA Veterans Activities Committee, immediately following the 2016 Augusta-CSRA Veterans Day Parade, for a special opportunity to honor our Nation’s Veterans and Service Members – past and present. This event will include special music by the U.S. Army Signal Corps Band, a traditional three-volley salute, and the playing of taps. Major General John B. Morrison, Jr., Commanding General, U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence and Fort Gordon will be the guest of honor and guest speaker.
What: American Legion Post 71
Where: Wade Hampton Park on Georgia Avenue in downtown North Augusta
*Colonel Dr. Michael Weber will be the guest speaker. The Navy choir will sing the national anthem. Fox Creek High School Band will perform. There will also be a wreath laying ceremony. Following the ceremony, Post Commander Ralph Wainright invites everyone to tour museum which now includes an artifact from the USS Arizona.
What: Grovetown Veterans Day Ceremony
Where: City Council Chambers, behind City Hall, 103 Old Wrightsboro Road
When: 11 am
What: Augusta Veterans Day Celebration
Where: Heroes Overlook, Tenth Street at Riverwalk Augusta
When: 1 pm
*Sponsored by Augusta Richmond County Historical Society to honor all men and women who have served our country in all wars. Hans Petersen, a U.S. Air Force veteran, will speak on “Courage-Service-Sacrifice.” There will be performances by the Fort Gordon 434th Army Band, with the Fort Gordon Joint Color Guard and Firing Detail.
What: Second annual Veterans Day BBQ
Where: USC Aiken Convocation Center, 2049 Champion Way, Graniteville, South Carolina
When: 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm

What: Edgefield Veterans Day Event
Where: Strom Thurmond High School stadium, 1131 Columbia Rd, Johnston, SC 29832
When: 9:30 am – 10:30 am
*The program will include a “march on” by area Veterans, a musical tribute to each branch of service represented, choral presentations and words of appreciation by State Senator Shane Massey and others. Show your red-white and blue colors and plan to attend this meaningful tribute to the brave men and women of our county and beyond who have served and sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy. Hosting the event is the Johnston American Legion Post 154 with former Miss South Carolina, Jane Jenkins Herlong, acting as emcee.
