UPDATE: Residents allowed to return home after North Augusta fire crews work to contain brush fire along I-520

UPDATE: Fire officials say residents are now allowed to return to their homes along Whitehall Road, Windy Mill Drive, Blanchard Road and the surrounding area in North Augusta.

Captain Nick Gallam with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office says the fire on the east side of I-520 is now under control.

Crews have pinpointed another brush fire in the area and are working to get that one contained.


NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.- Fire crews from several agencies are currently trying to contain a large brush fire in North Augusta.

Dispatch says the entire hillside is engulfed in flames near mile marker 22 along I-520 eastbound.

That part of I-520 is currently shutdown.

North Augusta Public Safety officers are currently evacuating homes in the Saddlewood subdivision as a precaution.

Evacuations are taking place at homes along Whitehall Road, Windy Mill Drive and Blanchard Road in North Augusta.

Friendship Baptist Church at 130 Claremont Drive is currently taking in evacuees.

Officials tell us no structures have been damaged.

They say planes are flying overhead to assess the fire now.

We have a crew at the scene.
