THOMSON, Ga. (WJBF) — Thomson’s Dakota Gergen is this week’s WJBF Scholar Athlete.
Gergen is a pivotal member of the 4A No. 2 Bulldogs football team, which is making its second straight appearance in the state quarterfinals. As the starting kicker for Thomson (12-0), Gergen is 74/77 on extra points and 6/7 on field goals this season.
“It means a lot because I get to represent my team and what I do in the classroom,” Gergen said.
Gergen is ranked in the top ten academically at Thomson High School with a 4.0 GPA.
“I think sometimes we get lost in always being an athlete and that’s okay, but being a true student athlete is what it’s all about,” Thomson head coach Rob Ridings said. “You can only play football for so long. The academic success and graduation, that’s what [I’m] most proud of. When I watch them walk across the stage at the Brickyard in May, I’m very proud of them.”
