(WKRG) – It’s beginning to look at lot like Christmas, but Sheriff David Morgan also has a message during the holiday season.
“If you are going to have packages delivered, make sure you are going to coordinate that,” says Sheriff David Morgan.
Thieves are out looking for opportunities to snag those unattended holiday gifts.
The department has put out public service announcements urging the public to be mindful of the delivery on their packages.
“It’s like leaving newspapers piled up in front of your home,” says Morgan.
And piled up packages are a perfect target for thieves.
“Those who are casing neighborhoods, who don’t have our best interest at heart will number one know you aren’t home and two it’s probably an easy mark to steal your gifts,” says Morgan.
And it seems as if the sheriff’s advice is catching on.
“To make sure you keep an eye on everything and have somebody there to receive for the package and have someone sign for it. I think you can, online, say that someone has to sign for it when it comes in,” says James Powderley.
“One of the biggest tips is have it shipped to your work or go home for lunch,” says K.C. McCall.
Whichever method you choose, the key is to protect your home and your gifts.
“They’re looking to just steal things. Remember these crimes are kind of snatch and grab,” says Morgan.
