AUGUSTA,Ga (WJBF) Augusta city leaders are talking about making it easier for craft breweries and distilleries to open downtown.
Under current city codes the Broad Street area is off limits to micro-breweries and distilleries .
They are only allowed in industrial areas.
But, As we first reported,Commissioner Sean Frantom wants to change the rules to allow them downtown.
Other commissioners say as long as they’re small that would be okay
“”And the establishment is such that it is not an industrial image site I’ve been to other cities where they’ve been in the downtown area and populated areas and they have fit in well primarily I don’t see a need not to,” says Commissioner Dennis Williams.
Commissioners are scheduled to talk about it at their meeting next week.
City zoning officials say brew pubs are legal downtown as long as most of their business is serving food.
