AUGUSTA,Ga (WJBF) A new name for Augusta’s newest office building.
The old library, that is being renovated for the public defenders office, will be named in honor of former Augusta Commissioner Willie Mays.
Though Mays served many years in city and county government, he wasn’t a lawyer so some questioned naming a law office after him..
But supporters say Mays deserves the honor.
You look at the history of Willie Mays 25 years straight in every capacity of elected officials from Augusta Richmond County to the consolidated government to being an interim mayor of the city you would hope they would realize what they’re building they’re in and it will improve on their career and they’re outlook on life,” said Commissioner Ben Hasan.
Commissioners also named the Diamond Lakes Community Center after Robert Howard the former Assistant recreation department Director who died in 2009.
