New housing unit to help homeless veterans in the CSRA

Augusta, Ga (WJBF) – This time next year some homeless and at-risk veterans in Augusta will have a new place to call home.  Tuesday, the Charlie Norwood Uptown VA Medical Center will break ground on a new housing complex.

The VA reached a lease agreement with Freedom’s Path LLC and the Augusta Residence Partnership to renovate and operate three historic buildings.

Ninety eight new units will provide permanent affordable housing for veterans and their families. The complex will also offer supportive services to eligible veterans.

“There’s no secret that here in Augusta we do have a homeless problem. These were buildings that were being underutilized so it’s great that we were able to allow developers to come in and actually rebuild the buildings to give it a better use,”  Chief of Construction, Kigwana Cherry said.

Construction is set to be complete December 2017.

Tuesday’s ceremony begins at 1p.m. at Charlie Norwood Uptown VA Medical Center’s auditorium.
