One dead after shooting near Carrie Street

UPDATE (8:03pm) – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is providing more details surrounding the deadly shooting on Carrie Street. According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office: “Thursday at 2:29pm the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 900 block of Carrie St in reference to shots being fired and one person being down. Upon arrival on the scene officers found a dark colored vehicle which had left the road way, struck a parked vehicle and a tree before coming to rest on the shoulder of the road. Officers then found a black male, later identified as James Bartell Smiley III, 28, inside the vehicle in the driver’s seat with at least one gunshot wound. Smiley was pronounced deceased at the scene. Smiley is being taken to the GBI medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur, GA for an autopsy.”

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) -According to the Richmond County Coroner’s Office 28-year-old James Bartell Smiley died at the scene at 2:26 p.m., Thursday afternoon.

Smiley was shot at least one time.

His body is being sent to the GBI crime Lab in Atlanta.


AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Richmond County Investigators are on the scene of a deadly shooting at a home on Carrie Street.

We’re told the coroner is currently at the scene, a house on the 1000 block of Carrie Street.

The victim’s name has not yet been released.

No word on a suspect yet.
