Teen charged with murder after body found in McCormick County

MCCORMICK COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) — A McCormick County teen has been charged with murder after a body was found earlier this week.

Wednesday, deputies responded to a domestic related incident on Goose Road in McCormick County.

That’s where they found the body of 18-year-old Mathew Van Adams.

We still don’t know the details about the victim’s death.

Saturday, a 16-year-old suspect was charged with Adam’s murder as an adult. The suspect’s name hasn’t been released.

NewsChannel 6 learned that the victim’s 16-year-old brother was brought in for questioning earlier this week.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is still investigating the murder.


MCCORMICK COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) — NewsChannel 6 has confirmed the identity of the victim from a murder in McCormick County.

The coroner says the victim is 18-year-old Mathew Van Adams.

His body will be taken to Newberry, S.C. for an autopsy on Friday.

On Wednesday, McCormick County deputies responded to a domestic related incident on Goose Road near Clarks Hill Lake.

Newschannel 6 learned Adams body was found, and the investigation was turned over to SLED who is now treating it as a murder investigation.

Investigators say a 16-year-old is in custody at the juvenile detention center in Columbia for questioning at this time.


MCCORMICK COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) — McCormick County deputies and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are working the scene where a body was found near Clarks Hill Lake.

It is now being treated as a murder investigation.

One person, an 18-year-old, was found dead on Goose Road near Lake Thurmond.

We’re told a 16-year-old is in custody at the juvenile detention center in Columbia for questioning at this time.

The incident appears to be domestic related.

Sheriff Clarke Stearns says the McCormick County Sheriff’s Office and agents with the South Carolina Law enforcement division are handling the case.
