EVANS, Ga. (WJBF) – Work is officially underway for the Plaza at Evans Towne Center Park. County leaders put on their hard hats and shoveled some dirt Tuesday morning at the official ground breaking ceremony.
And with the toss of some dirt, the Plaza at Evans Towne Center is on it’s way to becoming a reality. Tuesday may have been the official groundbreaking but dirt has been moving for a couple of weeks.
“Oh it’s very satisfying just to see the steel coming out of the ground and getting ready to pour some more concrete.”
Chairman Ron Cross has covered a lot of groundbreakings during his years in office but he says this one is special to him.
“I mean we have done a lot of things over the past ten or 15 years,” said Cross, “but this is the one that we’ve been looking at for so many years.”
The plaza will include retail shops, professional buildings and restaurants along with a parking deck. It will also be the home of Meybohm Realty with a roof top event center as part of Meybohm’s new building.
E.G. Meybohm says he excited to be a part of such a unique project.
“The opportunity to come downtown and walk around, meet your neighbors and your friends and say ‘I’ll meet you down at the Towne Center Plaza’ Just a place to go, a gathering place.”
Development Authority Director Robbie Bennett says the plaza is proof that Columbia County is growing and that citizens want diversity.
“This is the most significant events in Columbia County in recent years, it’s a testament to our growth. It’s a testament to the growth of our leadership and the business community.”
Phase 1 of the Plaza at Evans Towne Center is expected to be completed within a year.
