A new law requiring police officers to be trained to recognize mental illness

SOUTH CAROLINA (WJBF) – A new law requires every police officer in South Carolina be trained to recognize mental illness and to de-escalate confrontations.

The state’s law enforcement Chief, Mark Keel, says officers increasingly encounter people with mental health issues and need to know how to spot it.

The now mandatory course will be added to the training officers need every three years to get recertified.
