UPDATE (9pm) – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect in Friday’s incident at Karen’s Kiddie Korner on Deans Bridge Road.
Investigators say Deputy Tavaris Young responded in reference to nine children being left unattended inside of the daycare. Deputy Young said Richmond County Fire Inspector Jermaine Jennings told him he conducted an annual inspection during which he witnessed about nine children sleeping in the building, with no other adults besides the suspect, Karen Jones, inside of the building.
According to the incident report, “Inspector Jennings stated that he completed the inspection and stayed in the parking lot completing paperwork when he observed Karen Jones exit the building and get into her (car) and drive away from the property leaving the children alone and locked inside of the day care. Inspector Jennings stated that he then checked all the points of entry into the daycare and found them all secured. Inspector Jennings stated he observed several children up and walking around in the daycare unsupervised with no adult presence and he then called the Sheriff’s Office.”
The report says that Jones’ daughter arrived at the day care center about a half hour later and allowed access to the children, who were unharmed. Karen Jones was arrested when she returned to the day care center and charged with 5 counts of reckless conduct.
The oldest child was 9, the youngest child was 1. The children were returned to their parents.
