AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – Hotel Aiken and Marriott announced the staple of Richland Ave. will transform into a boutique style hotel.

It’s an $11 million dollar investment in the heart of the All America City.

The new hotel will be a mixture of historic design with new state-of-the-art features.

It will have a total of 74 rooms and a rooftop bar, set to be complete by April of 2019.

On Friday, business leaders got a first look at the future Hotel Aiken Courtyard by Marriott.

While the hotel has been around since the 1920’s, this current structure won’t change much.

Hotel owners and architects decided that rather than tearing it down, the plan is to just add-on to the building.

“This is the only historic hotel left from that era,” said Richard Rauh, the architect. “So what the community has to do is take advantage of the things that it does have.”

The renovations will embody the structures history by preserving key elements of its time.

“The historic elevator in the building is quintessential to 1920’s and we are saving it,” Rauh told WJBF NewsChannel 6.

Rauh says he wants to building on its southern charm by adding staple architecture of the South.

“It’s going to make Aiken Downtown jump off the map,” said Hospitality President Neel Shah.

There will be space for business meetings and lots of room for leisure activities, making it a driving force for tourism in Aiken.

Projection models have estimated it will generate between $254,000 to $640,000 dollars in revenue for the City of Aiken.

“We had an economic impact study done by the University of South Carolina and based on their study, you could see that with a multiplier of 1.6, for every 10 jobs that we can create at our hotel, another 6 additional jobs could be created around the community.” Shah said.

The Indian Cuisine restaurant, that’s currently on the first floor, is going to shut down in about 3 weeks and move to a new location on Whiskey Road.

Demolition, of some parts of the hotel, will begin the first week in January.
