Lady Jags beat the buzzer as Augusta sweeps Young Harris

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women’s basketball team hosted its first Peach Belt Conference game of the 2017-18 season in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The Jaguars met Young Harris College and won 70-68 in the final seconds.

Augusta (3-3, 1-1 PBC) jumped to hot start on YHC (4-6, 1-2 PBC) and never trailed

The Jaguars recorded a 49.1 field-goal percentage (26-for-53) and went 9-for-14 at the three-point line (64.3 percent). They were 9-for-12 at the free-throw line (75 percent). Young Harris had a 42.1 field-goal percentage (24-of-57), while shooting 42.3 percent from the arc and 64.3 percent at the charity stripe.

AU senior trio Joshlyn BelcherCynara PittJahmia Bradleyand junior Moneisha Goldsborough led the Jaguars offensively. Belcher made five three pointers to total 17 points, while Bradley hit four threes and had 14 points with eight rebounds. Pitt produced 16 points and nine boards, Goldsborough had 11 points off the bench, and Brianna Middleton had 10 with five rebounds for the Jags.

Augusta hit its first three shots to start the game and led 8-0 after three minutes of action. Bradley buried four three pointers in the first period as AU led 22-12 to begin the second. Bradley and Belcher each had 12 points at the pause to carry the Jaguars to a 39-29 halftime score. Despite matching YHC with 14 first-half turnovers, Augusta shot over 62 percent from field-goal range in the opening half and went 80 percent from beyond the arc.

Heading to the final period, the Jags led the Mountain Lions 55-40. YHC found life from three-point land and connected on their 11th three ball to make it 66-63 with just under 3:00 to play in the contest. A steal at the top of the key in the next possession tied the game for YHC at 66-all and the game went down to four seconds with a tie score.

Out of a called AU timeout from head coach Millette Green, Augusta junior point guard Mallory Myers found Pitt in the paint for the game-winning layup.

The Jaguars host North Georgia on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 1:00 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse for a Peach Belt Conference matchup. The women’s game follows the men’s matchup at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday for the annual Education Day game.
